You’ll have healthier teeth and a healthier life if you choose a non-toxic toothpaste. But there’s really no reason to take care of your teeth properly from the outside if you aren’t taking care of the inside of your body too. It takes both approaches to have a truly healthy mouth.

You see, there’s no way to separate dental health from your overall health. You may go to a different health care professional for every system of your body, but that’s no reason to think these systems aren’t intertwined and interconnected.

 

Before You Even Consider Non-Toxic Toothpaste

Perhaps the biggest factor in healthy teeth is a healthy insides. Even if you practice good brushing habits and choose the best non-toxic toothpaste on the market, you may not be fully protected from decay if you choose to eat a lot of refined foods, including sugars and flour. These processed foods make our bodies more acidic, and that simply isn’t good for gums, teeth, bones or our body’s ability to properly absorb calcium.

Research has also shown a correlation between good teeth and gums and a diet high in mineral and vitamins, specifically vitamin A, vitamin D and calcium. We also need chlorophyll from green plants and sea vegetables as well as vitamin C and phosphorus for calcium absorption. Vitamin C can even help reduce the likelihood and severity of plaque build up.

In addition, some dietary experts suggest the addition of fermented foods into our diet to help prevent harmful bacteria for taking over our bodies. This includes yogurts, kimchee, pickles and sauerkraut.

Then You’re Ready For Non-Toxic Toothpaste

A toothbrush along with many kinds of preparations can effectively clean teeth, but so many products on the market contain toxins. The most frequent offender is fluoride, found in almost all brand-name toothpastes. Another common ingredient is sodium lauryl sulfate, also believed to be toxic. Even some supposedly natural brands contain SLS, and fluoride is added to many natural toothpastes too — unless you take care to use a fluoride-free toothpaste.

The simplest toothpaste may be just some baking soda — also called bicarbonate of soda — mixed with a few drops of spearmint or peppermint oil. Add in some Xylitol for sweetness and to kill bacteria and you have a perfect preparation. Mix these ingredients into melted non-hydrogenised virgin coconut oil and make a paste that will keep in your cupboard for weeks. Making homemade toothpaste may be a bit more time consuming, but at least you can rest easy about the ingredients.

If you prefer to buy a non-toxic toothpaste at the store, skip the big-name brands and choose the Tom’s of Maine formula that specifically mentions it’s SLS free — or consider Tea Tree or Weleda brands. Just be sure to check labels since formulas change all the time.

To make sure that you and your family use your toothpaste twice a day as you should, it’s important to choose a non-toxic toothpaste that’s great tasting, leaves your mouth feeling fresh and doesn’t cost too much either.

That’s because a non-toxic toothpaste that’s too expensive to buy regularly won’t help anyone. And neither will one that tastes awful and doesn’t give you the clean, fresh feeling you desire.
